How to Replace a Motor Mount or Transmission Mount?

Hello everyone,Today, I'll be demonstrating how to replace a motor mount on your car or truck. I'll be using a Ford Windstar as an example, but the process will be similar for most vehicles. The main variation between models lies in the motor mount's location. However, the steps for removing and installing it, jacking up the engine, and related procedures remain consistent.

A motor mount serves to isolate the engine from the car's frame. The car's frame connects here, while the engine connects here. Rubber components dampen engine vibrations. To check your motor mounts, refer to my video on diagnosing bad motor mounts, linked at the end and in the description.

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Jack up the vehicle and secure it on jack stands. As an additional safety measure, I've placed an extra jack stand nearby. When working under the vehicle, ensure its stability. The motor mount we'll be replacing is on the passenger side.

Step 2: Gain Access to the Motor Mount Turn the wheel to create space for accessing the motor mount behind the tire.

Step 3: Inspect the Mount Before going under the vehicle, perform a stability check. Shake the car to ensure it's firmly supported. Always prioritize safety.

Step 4: Remove the Top Nut Working underneath the car, use extensions to reach the top bolt. Take care while maneuvering and locate the bolt. If necessary, a breaker bar may be required, especially for original motor mounts.

Step 5: Remove the Bottom Nut With the top nut off, move to the front of the vehicle. Remove the bottom nut. Both nuts need to be taken off before jacking up the engine.

Step 6: Jack Up the Engine Carefully position a jack with a piece of wood under the engine to support it. Jack up the engine by pressing against the solid points, such as the transmission or the engine.

Step 7: Remove the Old Motor Mount With the engine lifted, you can easily remove the old motor mount. Wiggle it out while taking care not to damage other components.

Step 8: Install the New Motor Mount Ensure the new motor mount matches the old one in terms of orientation and fit. Insert it, starting with the bottom stud, followed by the top stud.

Step 9: Secure the Nuts Apply blue Loctite to the threads and tighten the nuts by hand initially. Use a torque wrench to tighten them to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 85-foot pounds).

Step 10: Lower the Engine Gently lower the engine to allow the studs to fit into their corresponding holes.

Step 11: Final Tightening Using a socket and a torque wrench, securely tighten the nuts on both the top and bottom studs.

That completes the process of replacing a motor mount. This procedure is straightforward as long as you have access to the necessary bolts. The principles shown here can be applied to various vehicles. Remember that safety is paramount, so always double-check your work and use the correct torque specifications.
